Cylindrical Lens is used to correct astigmatism in the eye, and, in rangefinders, to produce astigmatism, stretching a point of light into a line. Cylindrical lens are available in either Plano-Concave Cylinder Lens or Plano-Convex Cylindrical Lens configurations. Plano-Concave Cylinder Lens has a negative focal length and are used for image reduction or to spread light. Plano-Convex Cylindrical lens has a positive focal length, which makes the cylindrical lens are ideal for collecting and focusing light for many imaging applications.
Meniscus Cylinder Lens can increase the NA of the system while only adding slightly to the total spherical aberrations. The Negative Meniscus cylinder Lens is used to increase the focal length of another lens while maintaining the angular resolution of the optical assembly. This lens shape is best used when one conjugate is relatively far from the lens.
